No fewer than 13 individuals perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
